Olevia Kershaw

August 2, 1928 — March 24, 2017

KERSHAW, Olevia "Charlie" (nee Young)- age 88, died Friday, March 24, 2017 at her residence in Fenton. No formal services will be held. Visitation will be held on Friday, March 31, from 12 PM - 6:30 PM at Sharp Funeral Homes, Fenton Chapel, 1000 Silver Lake Rd., Fenton. Those desiring may make contributions to the Bright Focus Foundation https://support.brightfocus.org. Olevia was born in Hollywood, MO on August 2, 1928. Her father, who sought work in Michigan's factories, moved the family north when Olevia was still an infant. Olevia graduated from Fenton High School in 1947. She also worked as a waitress at Barney's Restaurant on Long Lake Rd. where she would meet her husband, William "Bill" Kershaw. They made their home in Fenton where they raised two children, Joe and Laura Kay. In addition to motherhood, Olevia kept busy by dancing, roller skating, and bowling. Though, she wasn't only active, she was creative, always crocheting, knitting, quilting, and doing needlework. In fact, her children and grandchildren have many of her own creations as keepsakes by which to remember her. She adored the holidays and always took pride in decorating her house. She liked to travel, enjoying several family vacations as well as senior bus trips and mystery trips in her later years. Her family will hold memories of her in her home on Runyan Lake, beaming as she watched the little ones play in the water, baking them cookies, and wrestling them to the ground like a kid herself. They'll recall her as a devoted and proud wife of a World War II Navy Veteran, never leaving her husband's side throughout the years he battled Alzheimer's. And all will regard her as a survivor, suffering some health setbacks of her own late in life but fighting on and on in spite of them. She was a treasured daughter, sister, aunt, cousin, and mother to Joseph Kershaw (Graciela) and Laura Kay Jones (Frank), grandmother to Shane O'Dell (Amy), Jesse Kershaw (Julie), Robert Kershaw (Hayley), Holly Kershaw (Greg), and Lauren Slatton (Tony), and great grandmother "GG" to eight great grandchildren. Olevia was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Grace Young; her beloved husband, William Kershaw; and five adoring siblings. A special thank you to the caregivers of Posey's Place staff who became like family. Online tributes may be shared on the obituaries page of www.sharpfuneralhomes.com.
