Bess Hurand -- Age 94, of Flint, died Saturday, June 6, 2015 with family present. Funeral services will be held 1 PM Wednesday June 10 at Sharp Funeral Homes, Miller Road Chapel, 8138 Miller Rd., Swartz Creek, Rabbi Karen Companez and Rabbi Yisroel Weingarten officiating. Interment in Machpelah Cemetery, Flint. She was the beloved wife of Arthur Hurand; daughter of Leah and Samuel Bryer; sister of Lillian Shulman, Dr. Ben Bryer, and is survived by her brother Max (Judith) Bryer. She was the loving mother of Lynne, Gary (Carol), Robert (Katchen Schibilsky), David (Martha Salyers), Sally and Jeffrey (Barbara) Hurand. She was the grandmother of Joshua (Ashley), Sara (Elie Weiss), Shoshana, Nicola Reeves (Tom), Gates (Megan Campisi), Miles, Clay, Ashley, Jennifer, Reyna Hurand, and Jordan Spain; great-grandmother of Eitan and Jonah Weiss and Nicholas Reeves. She is also survived by several nieces, a nephew, great nieces and nephews. Bess was a lifelong resident of Flint, and along with her husband Arthur was very active in both civic and Jewish community organizations, and very supportive of the city of Flint of which they were so proud to be part. She was especially dedicated to the Flint Institute of Arts where she served on the boards of both the Institute and Founders Society in leadership capacities and was a Docent. The Institute established an annual award in her honor, "The Bess Hurand Award for Outstanding Service as a Docent." She also helped establish the Art Rental program where she served as a volunteer for many years. She was a member of Congregation Beth Israel and Beth Israel Sisterhood, Pioneer Women, Flint Institute of Music Allegro Society, Planned Parenthood, Genesee County Bar Association Auxiliary, Shakespeare Club, a life member of Hadassah and ORT. She was also a recipient of The Flint Jewish Federation Donald Riegle Community Service Award. The family offers special thanks to loving caregivers Becki, Devra, Jodie, Kim, and Sherry; and the caring staff at Hyde Park Assisted Living and Memory Care and Heartland Hospice. Bess and her husband of almost 70 years, Arthur, were devoted to family, friends and community. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Flint Institute of Arts, The Community Foundation of Greater Flint Women and Girls Fund, the Flint Jewish Federation, Macular Degeneration Foundation, or the charity of your choice.
