Dorothy Winegarden

WINEGARDEN, Dorothy Dinner - 9-22-1914 to 2-13-2009 (94). Beloved Wife, Mother, Sister, Aunt, Grandmother, Great Grandmother, and friend. Dorothy died as she wished in her home in Flint, Michigan. She was born Dorothy Carolyn Dinner in Boston, MA in 1914. She graduated from Brookline High School and was part of the Wellesley College Class of 1936. She received her dental hygiene degree from Tufts University. Dorothy came to Flint after her marriage to Jerome Winegarden, an Attorney, in 1937, and has lived in Flint for 72 years. She was as an active member of the community as a Realtor, working for Darby and Sons and Piper Realty. Dorothy has a long resume of volunteer work beginning with The Red Cross and The Motor Corps in WWII. Later, she became active with the Needlework Guild Association, The Girl Scouts of America, Temple Beth El Sisterhood, and The Lawyers Wives of Michigan. Dorothy was a loving homemaker, talented knitter, bridge player and sports fan. She loved the outdoors, was an avid golfer and was a long time member of Atlas Valley Country Club in Grand Blanc. Dorothy was the last surviving member of her generation of the Winegardens in Flint, and the Adolf I. Dinners of Boston. She is pre-deceased by her husband, Jerome, her sister Janet (Jimmie) Gross and her brother, Richard (Buddy) Dinner as well as Meyer (Spike) and Leslie Winegarden and their wives. Survivors include her children, J. D. Winegarden, Jr. and his wife Ronnee, of Flint; and Ellyn Winegarden Sudow of Washington DC; Grandchildren: Jay Winegarden and Lisa Markman of Ann Arbor, MI; Lindsey and Bill Barnes of Chicago, IL; Billy Winegarden of Whitefish, MT; Elyse and Taggart Howard of Vail, CO; and Alyson Sudow of San Francisco, CA; Great Grandchildren: Emma and Charlotte Winegarden, Eli Howard, and Atlas, Teddy, and Jack Barnes. The family wishes to thank Dorothy's caregivers, Theresa, Nasreen, Kim, Jody, and Connie, for their love and devotion during the past four years, along with Hospice of Mclaren. A very special thank you to 'Dottie's'; nieces, Caroline Zecca Ferris and Patricia Dinner and her sister-in-law, Joan Withers Dinner for making it possible for Dorothy to remain comfortable and happy in her home. A private burial will be held at Clover Hill Park Cemetery Wednesday, February 18, 2009, in Royal Oak, Michigan. Following the ceremony, friends of the family are invited to celebrate Dorothy's life at her son's home at 5:00 in the evening. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her honor can be made to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation at (800)FIGHT CF or to The Cedar Street Childrens Center.
