Gilbert Haven

November 22, 1925 — December 8, 2007

HAVEN, Gilbert George - found shelter in the Lord's arms Saturday, December 8, 2007, at the age of 82.  Born in Chesaning, Michigan, Gil gave service in World War II as a member of the 101st Cavalry.  Gil was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, Army Occupation Medal (Germany), American Theater Ribbon, European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon and World War II Victory Ribbon. After earning a Master's Degree from Central Michigan University, Gil married Faye on October 20, 1960. The Frankenmuth, Clarkston, and Lapeer School Districts benefited from over 30 years of his dedicated teaching. Gil dedicated his time to the Oakland County Pioneer Historical Society, Linden Masonic Lodge 132, VFW  4642, Flint Genealogical Society, Genealogical Society of Vermont and the Flint Institute of Arts. Gilbert was an avid woodworker, lathe turner, historian, artist, sailor and genealogist whose travels included mission work in Belize, research in Scotland, sailing the Great Lakes, and tenting in Alaska. A man committed to lifelong learning and physical fitness, Gilbert pursued interests in the art of ceramics and basket weaving and was a member of the local gym. Gilbert leaves behind wife Faye, children: Neil (Leah) of Idaho, Gayle (Tim) Brown of Kentucky and Keith (Marie) of South Lyon, Michigan. Gilbert inspired his grandchildren Mckenzie, Alex, Garrett, Claire, and Emma. A memorial service, with participation from the Linden Masonic Lodge 132, is to be held Friday, December 14, 11 a.m. at the Linden United Methodist Church, 201 S. Bridge Street, Linden. A 10 a.m. reception will precede the memorial service. Private family interment will be Thursday at the Great Lakes National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Linden United Methodist Church or the Oakland County Pioneer Historical Society. Remember me not with tears and sadness but rejoice in my journey home.
