Jeremiah Murphy

December 3, 1947 — March 8, 2015

Jeremiah "Jerry" Murphy passed away Sunday, March 8th after a long battle with cancer. Jerry was born on December 3rd, 1947 in Detroit, Michigan to Helen (Kelley) and Francis X. Murphy. He spent his younger years playing with his brothers at his family's home in Beverly Hills, Michigan and the Murphy family farmhouse in Hartland, Michigan. Jerry followed his older brother to Onarga Military School in Illinois. Their hijinks continued into their time serving in the Michigan National Guard, Airborne Infantry Division. He was honorably discharged from the National Guard in December 1972. While working at JC Penney after high school, he met his future wife, Celia. He pursued his Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from Wayne State University and continued with a career in sales, dealing primarily with the automotive industry. Jerry & Celia were married on May 19th, 1973 and raised two daughters in Clarkston, Michigan. He enjoyed motorcycles, talk radio and all things aviation. On any given weekend, you could find him mowing the lawn with his straw hat on, or listening to music while tinkering in his garage. Jerry will be remembered by his humor, his kindness and by his love for his family and friends. He was a man of few words, but left an impression on all he knew. He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Celia, his brothers Frank Murphy and Daniel (Michele) Murphy, daughters Meg (Wayne) Beutler and Mary (Matthew) Einheuser, grandchildren Nathan, Claire, Hannah and Luke, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Capuchin Soup Kitchen at www.cskdetroit.org. A memorial service will be held Sunday, April 12th from 1-4pm at Dick O'Dows Pub in Birmingham, Michigan. All are invited to share in a celebration of Jerry's life.
