Katherine R. HIGBEE

January 25, 1923 — February 14, 2009

HIGBEE, Katherine R., age 86, of Swartz Creek, died Sunday, February 8, 2009 at McLaren Regional Medical Center. Funeral Services will be 11AM Saturday, February 14, 2009 at Our Risen Lord Lutheran Church-Elca, 4040 Lapeer Rd., Burton. Pastor Susan Lidums and Rev. Kevin Knox officiating. The family will receive friends 10AM Saturday until time of service at the church. Interment will be at Great Lakes National Cemetery, Holly. Visitation will be 5-8PM Thursday and 1-4 & 6-9PM Friday at Sharp Funeral Homes, Miller Road Chapel, 8138 Miller Road, Swartz Creek. Memorial contributions may be made to Our Risen Lord Lutheran Church-Elca. Katherine was born January 25, 1923 in Summit, South Carolina the daughter of the late Javon Ethan Shealy and Katie Ballantine. She married Richard Duane Higbee on October 4, 1947 in Summit, South Carolina and he preceded her in death on February 13, 2005. During WWII, Katherine was a civilian clerk for the U.S. Army at Fort Jackson, South Carolina. She then moved to Michigan in 1949, and had resided in Swartz Creek for the last 50 years. Katherine was a member of Our Risen Lord Lutheran Church-Elca and enjoyed being involved with her family. Surviving are her 2 daughters, Sharon K. Strnad of Swartz Creek, Zandra J. Simons and husband Robert of Clio; 2 grandchildren, Joshua P. Simons and wife Jennifer of Taylor, South Carolina, Mary R. Simons of Clio; great-granddaughter, Emma Lynn Simons; sister, Vivian Shealy of South Carolina; sister-in-law, Germaine E. Knox and husband Billy of Flushing; aunt, Doris Clark of Midland; nieces and nephews, Michael Knox, Kevin Knox and wife, Debbie, Keith Knox, Donna Taylor and husband, Doug, Jim Hayes; and several great-nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by her sister Frieda S. Taylor and husband Raymond; brother, Francis D. Shealy; niece, Patricia Hayes; brother-in-law, Fred Shealy; father and mother-in law, Clarence J. and Mildred Mae Higbee.
