GWILLIM, Alfred, Jr., PhD - age 97, of Swartz Creek, died peacefully with his family by his side on Wednesday, February 26, 2014. Services will be held 10 AM Saturday, March 1, 2014 at Sharp Funeral Homes, Miller Road Chapel, 8138 Miller Rd., Swartz Creek. Visitation will beheld 6-8 PM Friday at the funeral home. Interment will be held 11:30 AM Tuesday, March 4, 2013 at Great Lakes National Cemetery. Dr. Gwillim was born March 5, 1916 in Wall, PA, the son of Alfred and Margaret (Hiscock) Gwillim. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in the 36th Infantry and Infantry Band during World War II where he earned the combat infantry badge, a Bronze Star, Bronze Arrowhead, and Five Bronze Service Star. Dr. Gwillim earned a bachelor's degree and master's degree from Wayne State University and a PhD from University of Michigan. He retired in 1978 as the Assistant Superintendent of Genesee Intermediate School District. Dr. Gwillim was a proud member of the American Legion Post 342 and the Detroit Federation of Musicians Local 5. Surviving are: three children, Cynthia Gwillim of East Lansing, Rebecca Gwillim of Burton and Thomas (Tammy) Gwillim of Swartz Creek; two cherished grandchildren, Jacob and Hannah Gwillim.
