Betty Leavitt

Betty Leavitt RN, BS, of Flint Township died Sunday, March 10, 2019 at the age of 94. She was born in Pontiac, Michigan in1924 to Russian Jewish immigrants, Herman Sarokin and Anna Sarokin. Betty's two brothers Paul and Barney Sarokin died previously. She graduated from the University of Michigan School of Nursing, Ann Arbor. Years late she graduated with her Bachelor of Science degree in Human services from Univ. of Detroit. She married Morton Leavitt, from Flint, and had four sons: Nelson, married to Jan, has two children (David and Katherine); Fred, married to Julie, has two children (Heather and Erik); Mitch, married to Jean; Andy, partner to Kit, has two children with his deceased wife, Katharine (Joshua and Eli). Betty's primary career was Clinical & Theoretical Psychiatric Nursing Instructor, Hurley Hospital School of Nursing for ~1967-1986. As a Registered Nurse she performed home assessments for Family Service Agency of Genesee County. In retirement, she obtained a Social Worker Technician License for the State of Michigan, and became Group Facilitator for divorce support at Flint YWCA, and Arthritis Support Group Facilitator at Arthritis Foundation of Flint. In addition, she taught at the Ivriah School of Congregation Beth Israel for many years, and also at Valley School in Flint. Husband Morton died in 1993. Betty was a past Chairperson for the Mental Health Resource Nurses of Genesee County, and member of Genesee Area Association of Counseling and Development. She will be remembered for her independent spirit and desire to help others. A graveside funeral ceremony will be held on March 14 at 1:00 pm, at Machpelah Cemetery, 4615 Branch Road, Flint. Thereafter, friends are invited to meet with family at Woodhaven Clubhouse, 5201 Woodhaven Ct, Flint Township, from 3:00 to 8:00 pm. Betty requested that, in lieu of any flowers, memorial donations can be made to Planned Parenthood at the Flint Health Center of Flint MI, or Congregation Beth Israel (Flint, MI), or Humane Society of Genesee County.
