Daniel Thompson

March 19, 1944 — April 13, 2023

Grand Blanc

Thompson, Daniel Franklin, age 79, of Grand Blanc, peacefully passed away on Thursday, April 13, 2023.

Dan is survived by his wife of nearly 58 years, Lynn Thompson (née Courney), daughter Julie (Brad) Tolley of Northville, MI, daughter Tammy (Jon) Cook of Oregon City, OR, and a son Daniel Thompson of Grand Blanc, MI.  He is also survived by siblings Lana (JD) Wright, Michael (Thelma), Patricia (James) Shutes, J A (Melinda), Toby (Teresa), Robin (Linda) and their families, along with many nieces and nephews, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by parents, J A and Mary (née Goodwin) Thompson, sister Bonnie (Hubert) Ragsdale, and brother, Johnny Jay Thompson.

Dan was born in Jonesboro, Arkansas on March 19, 1944. The family moved to Flint, Michigan in 1957, to a local area known as the Hall Flats. It is there in which fate would intervene placing the Thompson Clan across the street from the Courney Family and their (11) children. Dan and Lynn were sweethearts from the very beginning.

In 1962, he would graduate from Flint Southwestern High School. Dan loved sports, excelling in baseball and boxing, winning two Golden Glove awards as a welterweight.  Dan was the best athlete in the neighborhood, often being selected first in local pick-up games. He remained an avid sports fan, supporting the Detroit teams. In 1963, he began his 44-year career as a millwright at General Motors.

Dan will be remembered and loved by those who knew him. He was always more interested in everyone else’s stories, never drawing focus to himself. He took life’s blessings and challenges in stride often with great strength and courage.  He loved his family above all.

The family is planning a Celebration of Life in lieu of a funeral.  Online condolences may be left at the website of Sharp Funeral Homes (sharpfuneralhomes.com/tributes).  Donations in Dan’s honor can be made to the Muscular Dystrophy Association or the Eastern Food Bank of Michigan.  Arrangements by Sharp Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 6063 Fenton Rd., Grand Blanc, MI 48507
