Donald “Buzz” Purcell, age 87, of Swartz Creek, Michigan, passed away peacefully on April 7, 2026, at McLaren Hospital in Flint, surrounded by the love of his family.
Buzz was born on January 8, 1939, in Mt. Morris, Michigan, to Clair and Marjorie (Bedford) Purcell. From an early age, he was known for his energy, determination, and spirited personality. A proud graduate of St. Michael’s High School, Class of 1957, he earned the affectionate nickname “St. Mike’s Mighty Mite.”
Following graduation, Buzz continued his education at Sacred Heart Seminary in Detroit and later attended the former Flint Junior College. He went on to earn degrees from both Central Michigan University and Eastern Michigan University. Dedicated to helping others, Buzz built a meaningful career as both a school teacher and social worker, serving communities in Genesee County, Michigan, and Collier County, Florida, until his retirement in 2007.
On December 30, 1989, Buzz married the love of his life, Jill H. Burgess, in Sarasota, Florida. Together they shared many happy years filled with love, laughter, and cherished memories.
Buzz had a passion for staying active and embraced life with enthusiasm. He loved basketball, running, and walking in the Crim, and he proudly completed many marathons over the years. He will be fondly remembered by all who knew him for his infectious personality, quick wit, unforgettable storytelling, and his unmatched ability to host a wonderful party.
He is lovingly survived by his wife, Jill; his children, Matthew (Theresa), Cheyenne, and Mitchell; and his five beloved grandchildren, Natalie (Austin) Carr, Maria (Cole) Sarkon, Halle Purcell, Hartley Purcell, and Gianna Purcell. He is also survived by his brother, Dennis (Cathy) Purcell of Arizona.
Buzz was preceded in death by his parents, Clair and Marjorie Purcell; his brothers, Bob, Jack, and Tom; and his sister, Joyce Callahan.
Cremation has taken place at Sharp Funeral Homes - Miller Road Chapel in Swartz Creek, Michigan. A private celebration of life will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Buzz’s memory to Catholic Charities of Flint.
Buzz lived a full and vibrant life, rich with love, adventure, friendship, and treasured moments with family. His legacy of warmth, humor, and kindness will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
