Donald Gartland Jr.

GARTLAND, Donald M. - age 70, of Fenton, passed away peacefully on March 5, 2017 in Alabama surrounded by his family after an unexpected health issue. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated 10 AM Saturday, March 18, 2017 at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 600 N. Adelaide St., Fenton with Fr. Jim Rolph celebrant. The family will receive friends from 9 AM - 10 AM Saturday at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the St. Luke's N.E.W. Life Center, 3115 Lawndale Ave, Flint, MI 48504. Donald was born August 21, 1946 in Corpus Christi Naval Air Station, Corpus Christi TX, the son of Donald M. and Patricia Marie (McGovern) Gartland. He was a 1965 graduate of St. Michael High School. Donald married Mary D. Strange on December 1, 1973. Don was employed by Plumbers and Pipe Fitters Local # 370 retiring in 2002 after 40 years. He loved to hunt, fish, work around the yard and relaxing with crossword puzzles. He was a devoted family man and enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, especially during the summer when they came to swim and ride the pontoon with their Papa. Don leaves to cherish his memory: wife, Mary of Fenton; son, Sean (Kellie) Gartland of Fenton; three grandchildren, Louisa, Ryleigh, and Cooper; two sisters, Teri Miller, Mary Ellen (Norman) Banfield; three brothers, John (Shirley) Gartland, Kevin (Sandra) Gartland, and Joe (Kerry) Gartland; several nieces and nephews. Donald was also an American dad to four exchange students, Mauricio Cuevas, Niko Pihamaa, Teemu Rissanen, and Florian Koelliker. He was preceded in death by: his father, Donald M. Gartland, Sr. and mother, Patricia Marie (McGovern) Gartland. Arrangements by Sharp Funeral Homes, Fenton Chapel, 1000 W. Silver Lake Rd., Fenton.
