Grand Blanc

With sadness and love, we announce the passing of Rev Donald Gene Zumwalt - Age 84, of Grand Blanc. Donald passed away peacefully Thursday, September 26, 2024, at the home of his daughter and son-in-law. Private arrangements are entrusted to Sharp Funeral Homes, Miller Road Chapel, 8138 Miller Road, Swartz Creek, Mi. In lieu of flowers, those desiring may direct memorial contributions to the St Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Donald was born September 24, 1940, in Danville, IL, the son of Arthur and Mary (Edwards) Zumwalt. He was a 1958 graduate of Danville High School in Danville, IL. He received a bachelor’s degree in arts from Lynchburg University, Lynchburg, VA and a Bachelor of Divinity from Lexington Theological Seminary Lexington, KY and was ordained in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). He served as a congregational minister in Iowa, Illinois, and Michigan. He married Elizabeth Chapman Givens August 10, 1962, and she preceded him in death August 27, 2023.

Don possessed a strong work ethic and demonstrated this through his lifelong commitment to the church. He cherished his time doing church work, visiting those homebound or hospitalized. A favorite place of his was Crystal Conference Center, a church affiliated camp in Frankfort, MI. Don spent a week almost every summer during the many years they lived in Michigan leading high school summer camps. He was a true friend to many, his comforting presence and warm heart drawing people into his circle. He enjoyed playing the harmonica and even after he was retired, rarely missed an opportunity to attend church.

Surviving are his children, Michael Zumwalt, Julie (Peter) Juengel, Scott (Tess) Zumwalt and Lisa (Stuart) Thomajan; grandchildren, Jordan, Amy (Nick), Jason, Aidan, Zayne, Zachary, and Cooper; great granddaughter, Savannah Jo; and several nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by his parents, Arthur, and Mary Zumwalt; brothers, Arthur, and David Zumwalt; and sister, Mary Sue Ewing. Tributes may be shared at www.sharpfuneralhomes.com. A service of celebration of life for both Rev Zumwalt, and his wife Elizabeth will be held at a future date to be determined.
