SALTIEL, Dora (Levy) - age 86 of Flint, passed away Tuesday, February 4, 2014. Funeral services will be held 11 AM Friday, February 7, 2014 at the Chapel of Machpelah Cemetery, 4615 Branch Rd., Flint. Rabbi Karen Companez officiating. Those desiring may make contributions to Hadassah or the U.S. Holocaust Museum. Dora was born to Solomon and Sarina (Perahia) Levy on January 3, 1928 in Thessaloniki, Greece. She married Solomon Saltiel in 1946 and they emigrated to Flint, Michigan in 1955, under the sponsorship of the Flint Jewish Community. Dora was a Holocaust survivor who came to this country knowing very little English. She obtained her GED from Northern High School and was a graduate of Mott Community College. Aside from being a homemaker, her career included working as a real estate agent and as a seamstress for the Vogue Clothing Store in Flint. She was a member of UAW Local 651 and retired from AC Spark Plug. Dora was a member of Congregation Beth Israel, the Sephardic Community of Greater Detroit and a past treasurer of Hadassah. She enjoyed volunteering to assist the Jewish Social Services Senior Lunch program. Dora was well known for her hospitality, cooking and baking skills, particularly for her Greek pastries. Later in her life she volunteered to speak to high school and college students about her experiences hiding from the Nazis during the Holocaust. She is survived by her son Alan Saltiel, daughter Rita (Mitchell) Berzin, and son Martin (Ann) Saltiel. She is also survived by her grandchildren Daniel (Maria) Saltiel, Sara (Adam) Carter, and Adam Berzin. Brothers Sam Levy and Joseph (Adina) Levy and many nieces and nephews both in the U.S. and Israel. She was preceded in death by her husband Solomon, son Morris, her brothers Isidore Levy, Albert Levy and her sisters Aime Cohen and Alice Shaltiel. The family would like to thank the staff of Homewood Village of Genesee Valley and Gentiva Hospice for their special care during her illness.
