Douglas was born on December 18, 1941, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to the late Edwin and Mary (Zuan) Huizenga and lived in the Grand Rapids and Fenton areas throughout his life. He dedicated a portion of his life to serving in the United States Navy, where he exemplified the values of honor and commitment. Following his military service, he devoted 35 years to General Motors as a respected manufacturing engineer and tool-maker, leaving behind a legacy of hard work and ingenuity.

In addition to his professional accomplishments, Douglas was a nurturing father and teacher whose love resonated deeply within his family. His calm demeanor, patience, resilience, and witty spirit enriched the lives of those around him, most notably his children and grandchildren, who will forever hold dear the lessons he taught. A loyal and thoughtful man, he enjoyed lake life, music, time on "the farm", building and designing solutions, and being with his neighbors and friends.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 32 years, Rita Long-Huizenga, and his cherished children: Barry (Merry), Darin (Jenny), Bryan, Stacey (John) Snyder, and Kristin (Reggie) Wessel. The warmth of his legacy continues through his grandchildren: Tony (Olivia), Kilian, Evan (Gina), Nick, Jenna (Charlie), Violet, Matt, Max, Ryan Jr., Emily and Cole. He is also remembered fondly by his siblings, Kevin, Barb (Bruce Cohen) Denison, and Debbie (Paul) Premoe; numerous nieces and nephews; and his sister-in-law, Rosemary (Larry) Scheff.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Ann Huizenga; his son, Ryan Long; sister-in-law, Barbara King-Conkle; and brother-in-law, Bruce Denison.

Douglas Charles Huizenga leaves behind beautiful memories, woven into the hearts of those he cherished. May we all carry forth his legacy of love and kindness as we bid farewell to a remarkable man.
