Dr. Gerald Berner

BERNER, Dr. Gerald Paul - age 90 of Flint, died January 19, 2023. Dr. Gerald P. Berner passed away after battling dementia for a few years. He was the beloved husband of his wife, Sylvia, for 58 years. He was the father of Francine Wunder and Dr. Jason Berner. His grandsons, Alex Wunder, Justin Wunder and Zachary Wunder. Dr. Berner was a graduate of the University of Michigan Medical School and practiced pediatrics in Flint for 52 years as a sole practitioner. His family always said that he gave his life to the children of Flint, being a very dedicated physician. He executed the principles of the Hippocratic Oath, avowed when he became a doctor, to the highest level. He treated children in Flint in multiple generations, irrespective of monetary remuneration. His priority was the welfare of the children, and he always called the parents nightly to check on their status. Dr. Gerald Berner was a true doctor in his ardent professional commitments. He was board certified in pediatrics locally and nationally. His voice will be perpetually resounded in the book he wrote: The ABC's of Becoming Super Parents: Opening the Door to the Best Children and a More Civilized Society. His purpose in writing the book is to serve as a teaching tool for parents to guide their children to become well-adjusted adults. Gerald Berner as a pediatrician enriched our Flint Community. He loved the children he treated, and they loved him in reciprocation. His life and efforts made our world a better place. Dr. Berner was a member of the Genesee County Medical Society for 52 years, affiliated with Hurley Hospital for over a half a century, and supporter of the Neonatal Clinic at Hurley Hospital with its' latest technology to give premature babies the best opportunity for survival. In addition to his wife, daughter, son, and grandsons, he is survived by brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Linda Berner of Saginaw; and several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Abraham and Rita Berner of Bay City, MI and brother and sister-in-law, Irving and Florence Berner of Flint. The family thanks Grand Blanc Fields Assisted Living for their excellent care of "Doc". Contributions may be made to Children's Miracle Network, Temple Beth El, or a charity of choice. Funeral services will be held 1 PM Sunday, January 22, 2023, at the Chapel of Flint Memorial Park, 9506 N Dort Hwy, Mt Morris, MI 48458 with Rabbi Jeffrey Ableser officiating.

The family will sit Shiva on Sunday and Monday evenings at 5 pm. There will be a service at 7 p.m. on Sunday only.
