Edgar Backus

Backus, Edgar E.- Age 94, of Flint, died April 29, 2019. Services will be held 11 AM Thursday May 9 at Sharp Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 6063 Fenton Road, Flint. Interment at Great Lakes National Cemetery, Holly. Visitation will be held 10-11 AM Thursday, May 9 . Those desiring may make contributions to the Charity of one's choice. Edgar was born September 8, 1924 in Elgin, Illinois, the son of Louis Backus and Bertha (Pfortmiller) Backus. Edgar served in the U.S.Army during WWII. He started college and then was drafted. He went back to college at Northwestern University after serving in the Army. He married Dorothy Reimer in September 15, 1951; she preceded him in death November 11, 2003. He worked for many years in radio and television broadcasting. He worked for ABC 12 for many years as a news reporter. He then went to work for the Flint Journal covering City Hall, Police Beat, and the Courts. He finished his career as the editorial page editor at the Flint Journal in 1991. Ed returned to college after working many years and earned his Bachelors Degree from the University of Michigan-Flint in 1998. Surviving are: two sons, John Backus of Ortonville, and Thomas and wife Pasqualine Backus of Grand Blanc; granddaughter Julia Backus of Grand Rapids. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother Paul; and wife Dorothy. Tributes may be shared at www.sharpfuneralhomes.com.
