Elizabeth "Betty Jo" Long

November 4, 1937 — May 27, 2025

Swartz Creek

Elizabeth “Betty Jo” Long, age 87, of Swartz Creek, passed away after a courageous battle with cancer. Betty Jo was a tiny woman but that had no bearing on how much “strong-will” she had. She was extremely determined to make it to remission when she was diagnosed with cancer. Not once did she ever give up. The family asks that you continue to keep them in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. Sharp Funeral Homes - Miller Road Chapel has been entrusted with funeral arrangements. Those wishing to write condolences may do so by visiting www.sharpfuneralhomes.com.

Betty Jo was born on November 4, 1937, to the late Roy & Lucille (Jones) Long. She attended Flint Central High School, class of 1956. The first job she ever had was with the Flint Journal as a young teenager. In fact, she had the largest paper route at that time serving 300 customers! Betty Jo went on to work as a cashier at the Hamady Brother’s Grocery Store and lastly a teller at Chase Bank.

Those who knew Betty Jo would say she had a sweet tooth; this was something that she had to satisfy every day. Her favorite sweet snack were brownies. She was a collector of lighthouses and loved to fish. Her fondest memories were those spent with Carol at the casino, where she managed to have all the luck. In recent years followed the Tigers and the Detroit Red Wings and always liked a movie in the evening before bedtime. Once the weather was warm, she looked forward to sitting in her garage and catching up with the neighbors.

She is survived by her life partner and love of her life for 40 years, Carol Jackson; brothers, Roy Long, Russel Long and Robert “Bob” (Linda) Long; brother-in-law, Paul Steinhauser and special nieces who cared for her, Bethany “Beth” Posa, Sue Robbins and Connie Hahne. She is further survived by many other dear nieces, nephews and other family members and friends.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Sandra Steinhauser and infant sister, Beverly Long.
