BARNES, Ernest V. - age 98, died at home on January 9, 2023. He was born in Pontiac, Michigan on June 7, 1924. Married Catherine Baker in Lansing, Michigan on December 23, 1944. He served in World War II as a Tech Corporal in the Army. He made his living as a farmer, worked in the Grand Blanc Tank Plant, and as a salesman in various fields before owning Tank and Pump of Michigan, belonged to the Michigan County Drain Commissioners since 1964, and was a life member of American Public Works Association. He was a Founding Member of the Fenton Lions Club, has been a member for over 58 years, receiving many awards, including two Melvin Jones Awards. He was a life member of the Fenton VFW and a former member of the Fenton City Planning Commission, Neighborhood commissioner for Boys Scouts, and Board member for Boy Scouts Troop 212. Ernie and Kate had 5 children, Penny (James) Warner, Atlanta, MI; Laney (Dianna) Barnes, Blanchard, MI; Dennis (Joy) Barnes, Bushnell, NE; Barry (Steve Burton) Barnes, Palm Springs, CA; Cynthia (Kenneth) Jensen, Bardstown, KY; 12 Grandchildren, Dawn Warner, Jeffrey Warner, Barbara Stein, Christopher Barnes (deceased), Frank Meo, James Meo, Michael Barnes, Dawn Baker, David Cooper, Victoria Foster, Kyle Jensen, Caitlin Jensen, 28 Great Grandchildren and Great Great-Grandchildren, one Barnes family niece, Helen (Doug) Krantz, and numerous Baker family nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by his wife of 67 years Catherine (Baker) Barnes, Mother Alta (Barnes) Vandervoort, Father Ernest Barnes, Brother W.J. "Dub" Barnes, Sisters Ina (Barnes) Tahash and Leontine (Barnes) VanKuren, and niece Janet (VanKuren) Rowe. Funeral services will be held 11 AM Tuesday, January 17, 2023 at Sharp Funeral Homes, Fenton Chapel, 1000 W. Silver Lake Rd., Fenton, MI 48430 with burial following at Great Lakes National Cemetery. Visitation will be held 2-4 and 6-8 PM Monday, January 16, 2023 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Fenton Lions Club, Lions International Foundation, or VFW Post 3243.
