Gene J. Somers

Gene Joseph Somers, born April 17, 1953, at the Naval Hospital in San Diego, California and raised in Flint, Michigan, passed away peacefully at home on March 8, 2026, following and extended illness with liver disease. He was surrounded by his loving wife and family.

Gene was a born-again believer in Jesus Christ and rested wholeheartedly in the completed wok of Christ’s sacrifice. His faith served as a steady foundation throughout his life, and he expressed great joy in the hope of soon seeing Jesus face to face.

He proudly served his country as a Naval Corpsman in the United States Navy and later as a corpsman serving with the Unites States Marine Corps, where he was affectionately known as “Doc”. During his military service he was stationed in Okinawa, Japan, Hawaii, and the Philippines. He also played in the United States Armed Forces Softball League as a shortstop during a championship season. After completing his active-duty service, Gene continued serving his country in the Army Reserves and the National Guard Reserves for several years.

Gene attended Carman High School in Flint, Michigan, and later studied at Bob Jones University and Clemson University. Throughout his life he spent time living in Michigan, South Carolina, and Tennessee.

Professionally, Gene spent most of his career working as a chemist and had a deep love and appreciation for the sciences. He also possessed a natural gift for explaining and teaching subjects such as math and science, and for a time shared that ability in the classroom as a high school teacher.

Those who knew Gene remember him as a lively and jovial man who loved a good joke and enjoyed laughing with family and friends. From a young age he was an avid outdoorsman who especially loved deer hunting and fishing and had a deep appreciation for God’s creation. He often said that hunters were the greatest conservationists.

Gene especially enjoyed teaching both of his sons to hunt and loved taking his family into the woods for hikes, sharing with them his appreciation for nature and helping them learn about the beauty and wonder of the outdoors.

Above all, Gene was a devoted husband and father. During his extended illness, his wife Robin Somers provided him with extraordinary love, devotion, and faithful care, remaining by his side with strength and compassion.

Gene is survived by his beloved wife of 46 years, Robin Somers; his children Matthew Somers, Kristina Moody (Thomas Moody) and Nicholas Somers.

He is also survived by his grandchildren Alexia, Evan, and Madison Somers, and Katherine and Jonathan Moody, as well as his great-granddaughter Chloe and son-to-arrive great-grandson Landon.

He is lovingly remembered as well by his cherished pets Copper, Arya, Enoch and Onyx.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Leonard and Joan (Amersdorfer) Somers.

The family would like to express heartfelt gratitude for the kindness and support shown by faithful friends Andrew and Melanie Volz, and to Dr. Tapper, whose extraordinary care and compassion meant so much to Gene and his family. The family also extends sincere thanks to the Veterans Administration and Elara Health for the compassionate care and support throughout Gene’s illness.

Gene will be remembered for his deep faith, dedication to his family, service to his country, love of science and the outdoors, and the laughter and joy he brought to those around him.
