SHEMES, Gladys Julia (Lasher) of Swartz Creek, died Thursday, July 28, 2011, two weeks after her 89th birthday. Funeral services will be Monday, August 1, at 10:00 a.m. at St. George Orthodox Church, 5191 Lennon Road, Flint. Visitation will be Sunday from 2:00 p.m. 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. 8:00 p.m. at the church. Gladys was born July 14, 1922 in Lansing to Michael and Mamie Lasher who came to Lansing from Lebanon. Being the last child and first girl born to a family of four boys, she was always very close to her big brothers Sol, Joe, Dave, and Jack, who all preceded her in death. She graduated from Central High School in Lansing. After marrying and moving to Flint, Gladys raised sons Mike and Paul, always placing a high priority on their education and family life. Gladys was the Chief Clerk at Whittier Junior High School for many years, enjoying her time with the students and teachers. Gladys was a member of St. George Orthodox Church. Her Lebanese rice, grape leaves, cabbage rolls and cheesecake delighted all as she brought family to the table for food and fellowship. While we mourn her passing, we celebrate the fact that she is in heaven.Surviving are sons Mike (Dolores) Shemes and Norman Paul Shemes. Sister-in-law Virginia Lasher, nephew Mike (Christine) Lasher nieces Anne Marie Lasher and Geralyn Lasher and great-nephews Michael Lasher and Christopher Lasher.
