Grant Serrell

September 14, 1921 — January 16, 2017

SERRELL, Grant Jr. "Joe" - Age 95, of Fenton, formerly of Rochester, passed away peacefully with family present on January 16, 2017. Visitation will be held from 10 AM until the time of the service at 1 PM, Friday, January 20, 2017 at Sharp Funeral Homes, Fenton Chapel, 1000 Silver Lake Road, Fenton. Burial will be the following day at noon at White Chapel Cemetery in Troy. He was preceded in death by Esta his beloved wife of 52 years; son, Grant J. II; daughter, Janice; sister Barb (Bob) Nolan; brothers, Dick (Helen) Serrell and Sam (Bernice) Serrell. Grant is survived by his son, William (Corrine) Serrell; two grandchildren, Jason (Izabela) Clark; Jennie (Ethan) Clarke; two great-grandchildren, Cassidy and Bryn Clarke; friend and companion, Ina; his half sister Becky (Benny) Yih; many loving nieces and nephews. Grant was born September 14, 1921 in Rochester, the son of Grant and Hazel (Heitch) Serrell. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corp and served during world War II in Australia, New Guinea, and the Philippine Islands. He retired from National Twist Drill in Rochester. After retirement he and Esta built their retirement home on Tipsico Lake a place that is special to the whole family and was a source countless wonderful memories and family events. Grant loved his family and enjoyed attending his children's, grandchildren's, and nieces and nephews life events! He loved golf, bridge, euchre and bowling and enjoyed boating, traveling, gardening and flowers. He was part of the Dream Team of euchre, Uncle Joe and Uncle Bob (Nolan) will certainly be voted into the Euchre Hall of Fame on the 1st ballot. Until he was 90 he had his yard full of flowers which he planted and cared for. In the spring when he would go into the local greenhouses to get his plants the retailers would roll out the red carpet! All of his family and most of his friends have many things in their homes that he made in his workshop during his retirement. During retirement Grant and Esta developed a wonderful group of friends in the Fenton area that they had many special times with, golfing, playing cards and traveling. One of those longtime friends Ina who lost her husband the day after Grant lost Esta in 2000, and my dad had many great times together both in Fenton and Florida, and supported each other through his remaining years. His last few years were more challenging, we were fortunate to have him receive wonderful care at Lockwood of Fenton and then at Gilbert Residence in Ypsilanti where he was when he passed. He was truly someone who enjoyed his long life and lived it to the fullest! He will be sorely missed. It gives us great comfort to know he is in a better place with those he loved that preceded him. For those that desire, contributions can be made in his name to The Gilbert Residence, 203 South Huron St., Ypsilanti, MI 48197. Tributes may be posted on the obituaries page of www.sharpfuneralhomes.com
