Harry Irvin Whaling

It is with heavy hearts and profound gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the peaceful passing of Harry I. Whaling, who left this world on August 30, 2026, after a courageous battle with cancer. Born on October 2, 1939, in DuBois, Pennsylvania, Harry was a beacon of strength, kindness, and adventure, leaving an indelible mark on all who knew him.

Harry was the son of the late Harry and Joy Whaling, His siblings were, Prudence, Wanda, Robert, Thomas, Patty and Pamela. In 1958, he married the love of his life, Nancy Schoch, embarking on a beautiful journey of 68 years together. Their love and devotion were a testament to their enduring partnership.

Harry's career at the General Motors proving grounds in both Arizona and Michigan showcased his dedication and work ethic. Beyond his professional achievements, Harry was a man of varied interests and passions. A great outdoorsman, he found solace and joy in the woods, fishing, hunting, and immersing himself in the beauty of nature. His artistic talents were evident in the paintings and carvings he lovingly created. A skilled photographer, Harry captured countless memories, leaving behind a treasure trove of photographs for his family to cherish.

His love for adventure and knowledge took him to all 50 states, where he became well-versed in the wildlife and cultures he encountered. Harry's stories and insights were a source of inspiration and wonder to those around him.

Harry is survived by his siblings Wanda and Pat, beloved wife, Nancy, and their children: Jeff and his wife Julia, Cheryl and her husband John, and Travis and his wife Stephanie. His legacy continues through his nine grandchildren: Abigail (Joe), Elizabeth (Aaron), Rosemary, Joy (Patrick), Jonathan, James, Anne, Travis Jr., and Samantha. Harry was also blessed with great-grandchildren Elliott, Preston, Eliza, Jack, Emma, Bonnie, and Beau, who brought immense joy to his life.

Preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Joy, and his siblings, Prudence, Robert, Thomas and Pamela, Harry's spirit, warmth, and love will forever be engraved in the hearts of his family and friends. His memory is a guiding light, reminding us of the beauty of life and the importance of family.

Harry I. Whaling will be deeply missed but forever live on in all of his family and the many things he instilled in their lives. He was always teaching his grandchildren and great-grandchildren how to do something! He taught everything from how to paint, hunt, fish, throw a football, shoot a gun, build a campfire, make a perfect smore and to love the upper peninsula! This is the living legacy he left us that we will always treasure. “
