John Evans

May 8, 1933 — April 27, 2014

John Richard Evans 5/8/33 - 4/27/14 John was born May 8, 1933, in Portsmouth, OH. Childhood adventures in Portsmouth's foothills, as well as summers on a family farm outside of Grayson, KY, were some of his happiest memories. After graduating from high school, John, his mother, and three sisters moved to Columbus, OH. He was first employed by the Royal Typewriter Company and was quickly named top regional salesman. Promotions at Royal move him to St. Louis, MO, Grand Rapids, MI, and then to Flint in 1961. Shortly thereafter, John started his own typewriter and office equipment business, Evans Enterprises, which became Business Computing Solutions when he expanded into dental and medical office computer systems, many years later. Throughout his life, John was an avid golfer and enjoyed history, science, and astronomy. He also loved old movies, jazz music, and dancing. John was known to everyone who knew him as a humble, honest, kind, and very friendly man who always welcomed you with a smile and heartfelt handshake, who sincerely wanted to know how life was treating you, and who would reach out to help when people (even strangers) were in need. During the latter part of his retirement, he volunteered for the McLaren Regional Medical Center Flint Auxiliary, where he was named one of the top volunteers and appointed to the position of Head of Membership. John was the greatest dad that anyone could wish for and he was absolutely dedicated to his family, placing his two children as his highest priority. He never missed an opportunity to bend someones ear with recounts of how proud he was of them. His children are very proud of his successful entrepreneurial spirit and tenacity, are inspired by his kindness and warmth, and adoringly remember his neighborhood 4th of July parades and his front yard ghost stories followed by trips to Baskin and Robbins for ice cream for all of the kids. John is preceded in death by his mom Inez, dad Richard, and sisters Glenna, Dixie, and Patricia. He is survived by his son John Evans, daughter and son-in-law Joanie (Evans) and Ed Towarnicky, and grand-daughters Annabeth, Jacqueline, and Meredith Towarnicky (with whom he loved to hide Tootsie Rolls around the yard and play "Hot & Cold"). His former wife Joanne Evans, good friend Nick Logan, and former mother-in-law Anne Davison will also miss him very much. A remembrance gathering will be held at Joanie and Ed's home on May 9, 2014, at 7:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, those who wish to do so are asked to please make a donation to the National Center For Children in Poverty, http://nccp.org/annual_fund.html.
