He attended Flint Northern, graduating in 1960, then attended and graduated from the University of Michigan Ann Arbor, earning his MBA from Eastern Michigan University shortly thereafter. John was an avid tennis player growing up, excelling at Flint Northern, and then playing at the University of Michigan. Additionally, John owned many rental homes and was a licensed realtor for Century 21. Upon retirement, John (along with his longtime business partner Bill Sbordon) founded Adjustable Locking Technologies, selling adjustable locking devices worldwide, a business that continues today.

John was an avid hunter, enjoying hunting throughout his life. John enjoyed the company of his many friends and family, joining him for a hunt or a round of golf at SMCC or Hammock Bay Country Club, always followed by a cocktail afterwards and many laughs. There is nothing John loved more than his family - a family man and patriarch to his children.
