Larry Shipman, a beloved husband, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on August 16, 2026.

Larry was born in Detroit, Michigan on July 7, 1948, to William Dewey Shipman and Thelma Ruth Shipman. He was one of four children and grew up alongside his older sister, Charlotte Evans; his brother, Carl “Rick” Shipman; and his younger sister, Sue Barron. Larry graduated from Madison High School in 1966.

Following high school, Larry was drafted into the United States Army in 1968. He served his country during the Vietnam era. Larry initially spent time in Vietnam before being transferred to Okinawa after it was discovered that his brother, Rick, was also serving in Vietnam. Because the military did not allow two brothers to serve in the same combat area at the same time, Larry remained in Okinawa while Rick continued his service in Vietnam. Larry served for approximately two years before returning home.

Larry had a lifelong love of music. Music brought him great enjoyment, and for a brief time he was able to turn that passion into a career as a DJ. He worked as a DJ in Alma, Michigan, and later spent time with KOOL COUNTRY in Corpus Christi, Texas.

Like many veterans, Larry faced challenges as he transitioned back to civilian life. He worked a variety of jobs over the years and continued to deal with significant health struggles and chronic pain. In 2011, Larry went to the Grand Rapids Veterans Affairs Medical Center, where he received a 100% service-connected disability.

One of the greatest blessings in Larry’s later years was meeting Joyce, whom he married on September 26, 2015, and loved deeply.

Larry will be deeply missed by his siblings, family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. His gentle nature, unwavering faith, love of music, and loving heart will never be forgotten.

Larry and Joyce loved each other dearly. After a lifetime marked by both joy and medical hardship, they are together again, free from pain and reunited in eternity.

Larry’s funeral will be held Friday, August 21, at 1:30 p.m. at Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly, Michigan, where he will be laid to rest with full military honors.
