Louis F. Wirth, Jr., age 96, passed away Thursday, October 10, 2013, with his wife Helen of 77 years by his side. Cremation has taken place. Louis was born in Bay City, Michigan, the son of Louis F. Wirth, Sr., and MaryAnn (Summerfield) Wirth. He graduated from Bay City Central High School in 1934, and married his high school sweetheart Helen A. Bowers on January 1, 1936, at the First Methodist Church in Bay City, Michigan. Louis was active in Boy Scouts, and received the honor of Eagle Scout rank. He was a Scoutmaster for many years with Troop 5 of the First Methodist Church. Louis enjoyed a successful 50-year career at The Dow Chemical Company, where he made significant contributions in the advancement of ion exchange resins for use in the process industries. Through his work at Dow, he travelled extensively throughout the U.S., Europe, Asia and Australia, often accompanied by Helen. Louis retired in 1981. Louis and Helen were long-time residents of Midland, Michigan, where they were members of the Midland Country Club. Louis enjoyed playing the piano, woodworking, home maintenance and golf as his hobbies. Louis is also survived by his daughter Janis Kay Bock (Cal) of Linden, Michigan, son Donald Louis (Linda) of Nashville, Tennessee, grandchildren Carol Dolata (Randy), Kristyn Godlew (Mark) and Jeremy Wirth (Kristy), five great-grandchildren, special niece Karen Zipser, sister-in-law Phyllis Wirth and many nieces and nephews. Memorial services will be held at 11am on Thursday, October 17, at the First Methodist Church in Midland, Michigan. Memorials may be made to the Shriners Children's Hospital.
