Mary Ann Conroy died peacefully at home at the age of 90 on September 1, 2025, surrounded by her loving family.
Mary was born on December 11, 1934 as Mary Ann Macksood to Louis and Nimrie Macksood in Flint, Michigan. She was married to her loving husband Joe Conroy for 63 years. Together, they built a life deeply rooted in family and community engagement.
Mary graduated from All Saints High School and Mercy College School of Nursing. She was a gifted student whose natural curiosity and love of reading famously led her to read every book at Dort School library by age 11. Her nursing career included teaching nursing at St. Joe’s Hospital School of Nursing and Mott College and culminated in her role as the Vice President of Nursing at Genesee Memorial Hospital. She was a fierce patient advocate, serving as the President of the American Lung Association of Genesee County. She also served on the Board of Directors of the Whaley Children’s Center and as President of Our Lady of Lebanon Catholic Church.
Mary was a beloved daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, friend and nursing professional. Virtually everyone who spent time with her found her to be warm, inquisitive and fun-loving. Mary’s defining feature was a deep caring for those in need, reflecting the core values of her strong Catholic faith.
Mary had an infectious sense of humor, and when telling a story would inevitably dissolve into uncontrolled laughter. She especially loved tales about growing up with her six siblings on Baker Street in the “north end” of Flint. These stories painted a vivid picture of a boisterous, fun-loving clan held together by Nimrie and Louis, who emigrated from Lebanon early in life but carried their strong sense of Lebanese culture to their new home in Michigan.
In her later years, Mary often recounted that having children was the best part of her life. That love was reciprocated by her children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews and dozens of friends who dubbed her “Mar” and relied on her unique mix of loving words, warm hugs and common sense advice. She expressed her love through unforgettable meals made on short notice for family and friends. She loved MSU basketball, the West Wing, MSNBC and classical music with equal fervor.
Mary will be greatly missed by her surviving husband, Joe Conroy, five children: Colleen (John), Kevin (Sheila), Kelly (Crane), Tim (Christine) and Christine (Farzad) and seventeen grandchildren: Kaitlin Mansour, Joanna Mansour, Erica Mansour (Matt Heussner), Jillian Mansour, Meghan Conroy, Grace Conroy, Molly Conroy, Ryan Kenney (Lindsey), Sophie Kenney, Clare Kenney, Caroline Kenney, Michael Conroy, Katie Conroy, Patrick Conroy (Sydney), Erin Conroy, Arman Khaledan and Camron Khaledan. She is also survived by her sisters Janice Macksood, Betty Ramsdell (Richard) and brother Tom Macksood (Holly), and dozens of beloved nieces and nephews. Mary was predeceased by her parents, sisters Catherine Roda and Louise Macksood; brothers Peter and Leo Macksood; brothers-in-law Don Roda and Bob Jubenville and sisters-in-law Diane Macksood and Linda Macksood.
Mary’s family extends special appreciation to her caregivers, especially Jessica Allen and Sage Gregg, and her hospice team, whose vigilant care enabled her to live at home in her final years.
A visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. on Friday, September 5th at Sharp Funeral Home, 1000 Silver Lake Road, Fenton, Michigan.
