Melvin Jack Flamenbaum

Melvin Jack Flamenbaum, beloved husband, father, grandfather, cousin, friend, mentor, and oral surgeon, passed away peacefully surrounded by love. Born on May 15, 1947, to Isaac Max Flamenbaum and Rose Flamenbaum, Mel lived a life defined by integrity, resilience, humor, and unwavering devotion to family and community.

For 56 years, Mel shared a remarkable partnership with the love of his life, Wendy Flamenbaum. Together they built a family that was the center of his world. He is survived by Wendy; his children Amy Flamenbaum (Ezra Kenigsberg), Dr. Michael Flamenbaum (Michelle Drake), and Mara Christos (Jason Christos); and his cherished grandchildren, Phoenix, Farrah, Lila, Calvin, and Georgia. Above all else, Mel loved his family. He celebrated their accomplishments, supported them through life's challenges, and delighted in time spent together. His grandchildren held a special place in his heart, as did his many lifelong friends, extended family members, and cousins. He also had a soft spot for the many beloved Flamenbaum dogs, who received his endless treats and attention.

Mel's commitment to learning began at Boston Latin School and continued through Boston University, the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine, and his oral surgery residency at Cook County Hospital in Chicago. He then served as a Captain and dentist in the US Air Force. Following his military service, he had a distinguished career as an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon. For decades, he cared for patients in Flint, Michigan, earning a reputation for clinical excellence, integrity, and compassion.

In addition to his practice, Mel was deeply committed to education and mentorship. He taught Oral Pathology for 13 years at the Mott Community College Dental Hygiene Program and was an oral surgery clinical instructor at the University of Michigan School of Dentistry.

Mel was an active member of Congregation Beth Israel and the Jewish Federation. He was also an avid photographer, tennis player, and golfer, approaching each and every hobby with the same levels of gusto.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Mel will be remembered for his generosity, loyalty, and boundless love. Helping others came naturally to him, and he faced life's challenges with remarkable determination and optimism, never losing his ability to find laughter and bring joy to those around him. His kindness left a lasting impression on all who knew him. While his absence leaves an immeasurable void, his influence, stories, and values will continue to guide and inspire the many people whose lives he touched.

Service will take place at 11:00 AM, Monday, September 7, 2026, at Sharp Funeral Homes, Miller Road Chapel, 8138 Miller Road, Swartz Creek. Rabbi Nathan DeGrout will preside with burial following at Machpelah Cemetery, Flint. Service will be live streamed and available to view on Melvin's obituary page at www.sharpfuneralhomes.com
