Burns, Michael Monahan - Age 74, of Flint, died March 23, 2026. A committal service will be at 1:00 PM Wednesday, April 8 at New Calvary Catholic Cemetery, Flint, Fr. Steve Makranyi officiating. Arrangements are being handled by Sharp Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 6063 Fenton Road, Grand Blanc, Michigan 48507. Memorial contributions in memory of Mike may be directed to Quality Living Systems, PO Box 7029, Flint, MI, or to the charity of one’s choice.
Born on June 3,1951, Mike was the beloved second son to Edward D. Burns and Mildred E. Burns - Wolcott. He was also a devoted brother to Edward ”Eddie” Burns, Jr. All of whom preceded him in death. Mike achieved so much in his well lived life, despite having an intellectual disability. This was due in part to the legacy his father helped create as a founding father of Group Living Facility in Flint, Michigan. Ed Sr., wanted the best for both of his sons and took measures to see that this happened, joining other concerned and dedicated parents and community members to create a place where their family members could be supported to achieve their greatest potential with inclusion in their community. This legacy lives on and is celebrating its 50th year.
Mike achieved so many of his own goals in life, including retiring from Pizza Hut in Flint after 19 years in 2015. He was a proud homeowner who enjoyed making his mother’s Homemade Chicken Noodle soup or other great recipes he had learned in his very own kitchen. He also enjoyed hosting his friends for various holiday dinners. He traveled throughout Michigan and the Southern states with both his family and friends, with Florida being his favorite place to visit.
Mike was a longtime member of the Terminators Bowling league in Grand Blanc and reveled in obtaining a strike, or better yet, a Turkey. He was a devoted Detroit Tigers and Detroit Lions fan and would watch /attend these games throughout their seasons with his many friends in the Hearthstone Supported Independent Living Program.
Mike was extremely fond of his short-wave radio and delighted in his ability to receive radio content from far off countries, such as Japan or Germany. He was also curious about Astronomy and purchased his own telescope and star finder and enjoyed reading the latest versions of his Astronomy magazine. Later, he would purchase and find joy with his own iPad during Covid. His greatest joy was found in spending time with his many friends, especially if coffee was to be consumed.
Mike was a wonderful, compassionate and caring man who leaves to cherish his memory: his best friend, John Korn and his family; special friend and caregiver, Cindy Venters; his many friends and support staff throughout the Quality Living Systems’ managed programs.
We would also like to express our appreciation to Nikki over at Maplewood’s Manor in Clio for the special loving care she provided to Mike most recently.
Till we meet again, my friend.
