Mitsuru Kobayashi

Nov 5, 1944 — Nov 2, 2026

Fenton, Michigan

Mitsuru Kobayashi of Fenton, Michigan, passed away on Monday, November 2, 2026, at the age of 81.

Born November 5, 1944, in Hiroshima, Japan, Mitsuru grew up there, earned his bachelor’s degree, and married the love of his life, Naomi (Nishie) Kobayashi on April 24, 1968. They welcomed two children, Megumi and Tatsuya, before making their home in the United States. Their daughter Karen was born shortly after they arrived. Naomi preceded him in death on May 16, 2004, and Mitsuru carried her memory with him every year after.

Mitsuru spent more than 30 years at General Motors, beginning as a mechanical engineer and retiring as a plant manager at V8 Flint Engine in 2005. He was known for his quiet determination and sharp mind, and he took great pride in his work. He helped design the system that transported the massive support beams for the Zilwaukee Bridge, and he developed a cooling system at the V8 Flint Engine Plant that was nicknamed “Lake Kobayashi.”

Outside of work, Mitsuru loved fishing, especially for sturgeon on the Columbia River in Oregon. He also enjoyed his daily walks, photography, and travel. During his years in Oregon, he often drove back to Illinois and Michigan to visit family, stopping at national parks along the way. He made sure every summer had a family trip to look forward to.

Quiet by nature, Mitsuru was a calm, steady presence. His love for his family spoke volumes. He cherished time with his children and grandchildren, and his grandchildren held a special place in his heart.

Mitsuru is survived by his son, Tatsuya Kobayashi; daughters, Megumi (Brian) Durant and Karen Kobayashi (Daniel Dopler); grandchildren, Jacob and Naomi Durant; his brother, Kazumoto; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Naomi; his parents; and three sisters.

In keeping with Mitsuru’s wishes, he was cremated and no formal services will be held. He will be laid to rest beside Naomi at Sunset Hills Cemetery in Flint at a later date.
