BRAINARD, Norman R. - age 88, of Fenton, died peacefully Thursday, November 5, 2015 at his residence. Funeral mass will be celebrated 3 PM Monday, November 9, 2015 at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 600 N. Adelaide St., Fenton with Rev. Fr. Dwight Ezop celebrant. Visitation will be held 3-5 and 6-9 PM Sunday at Sharp Funeral Homes, Fenton Chapel, 1000 W. Silver Lake Rd., Fenton where a scripture service will be held at 7:30 PM Sunday night. Visitation will also be held 2 PM - 3 PM Monday at the church. Those desiring may make memorial contributions to the St. John G.I.F.T. Campaign. Norman was born in 1927 in Detroit, the son of Ralph and Ila Brainard. He grew up in Detroit where he attended Northwestern High School and began his college experience in early 1945. He served in the US Army for fourteen months, and was assigned to a harborcraft company at Manila Harbor in the Philippine Islands. After military service he received a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering degree from the University of Detroit in 1952. In 1964 he received a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering degree from University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. He was a Registered Professional Engineer in the State of Michigan. He was employed by General Motors for nearly forty-one years, serving with the AC Spark Plug Division, General Motors Research Laboratories, and Electronic Data Systems. He was an active member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, the Society of Automotive Engineers, and the Michigan Society of Professional Engineers. Norman married his high school sweetheart, Marilynn Shefferly in 1949. They had eight children: Barbara, Norman (deceased), Thomas (Patricia), Dennis (deceased), Gregory (Suzanne), Steven (Diane), Patricia (Scott Tatro), and Marianne Kuch (Todd). Norman leaves one sister, Marian Gross; nine grandchildren and 4 1/2 great-grandchildren. In support of his mentally and physically handicapped son Dennis, Norman was active in community organizations including; Genesee County Mental Health Board, Genesee County Association for Retarded Citizens, and Michigan Association of Retarded Citizens.
