COHOON, Rodney "Rod"- of Durand, passed away February 8, 2026 after several weeks of a hard fought battle from complications of a severe stroke. Funeral Service Thursday February 19 at 1:00 PM with viewing starting at 11 AM prior at Sharp Funeral Homes, Miller Road Chapel, 8138 Miller Road, Swartz Creek. Chaplain Greg Rowan officiating. Visitation Wednesday, February 18 from 2:00-7:00 PM. Interment in the Spring at the Hillman-Rust Township Cemetery at a date to be determined. The family will have a celebration of life luncheon immediately after the service, held at Durand Eagles #3851, 5240 S New Lothrop Rd, Durand, MI 48429.
Rod was born in Durand on February 15, 1957, the son of Arthur and Phyllis (Kenyon) Cohoon. He graduated from Durand High School in 1975. Rod retired from Pontiac Motors at GM, where he worked as a Pipefitter and a skilled tradesman for many years. He was a member of UAW Local # 653 in Pontiac. Most recently, Rod taught crane certification classes for Optare Services. He enjoyed hunting, fishing - both on the lake at his house, and trips to Canada, and loved to ski both on the water and on the trails. Rod also played tennis and golf, and organized numerous Pipefitter Opens for his fellow union members. He was a fan of the Detroit Red Wings, Tigers, and Lions. On any random night you could find him at the tables or slots in Mount Pleasant or singing karaoke at one of his favorite corner taverns. Rod had a big heart, a boundless spirit, and always lived his life in service of others, no matter what was needed.
Rod is survived by his son, Kyle (Starr Sexton) Cohoon; brother, Stanley (Cheryl) Cohoon; sister Stacey (Brad Boldrey) Oesch; nieces and nephews, Michelle (Todd) Johnson, Stefanie (Tim) Cocanower, Adrian Oesch, Kenyon (Ashlie Hoffmeyer) Oesch, Nicole (Devan Cole) Oesch; numerous nieces and nephews, close cousins and friends beyond measure, and his two canine best friends, Lucky and Snickers.
Rod was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Phyllis Cohoon and an infant sister. Online tributes may be shared at www.sharpfuneralhomes.com.
