Sharon Lee Steckert (Sabisch), age 86, passed away peacefully from dementia on August 15, 2026, at The Oaks at Woodfield in Grand Blanc, Michigan.
Sharon was born on February 23, 1940, in Pontiac, Michigan, to Ray and Lydia Sabisch. She spent her adolescence in Saginaw, Michigan, where she attended Saginaw High School and Bay City Junior College.
She met Robert J. Steckert (Bob) while skating at the Brockway Roller Rink. On August 12, 1961, they were Wed. Sharon was a devoted wife and a mother of four. Sharon carried her caring nature into every part of daily life. She believed in embracing the simple things and making sure that the people around her knew how to take care of themselves and one another.
She began her nursing career at Bay City Junior College while she was still in high school and went on to earn her LPN. At the age of 59, Sharon graduated with honors from the University of Michigan-Flint with her Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Her early years were spent working at hospitals and nursing facilities. In her later years, she worked in personal home care until she was approximately 72 years old, bringing the same compassion and dedication to her patients that she brought to everyone she cared for throughout her life.
Outside of her nursing career, Sharon and Bob did almost everything together. They gardened, raised dogs, attended art fairs, walked on the beach, and worked side by side on the projects that filled their lives. Bob did the framing for Sharon’s artwork and helped set up for the fairs. They participated in the Tawas, Fenton, and other local community art fairs.
Sharon, an artisan painter, took great pride in her work. She also loved gardening and sewing, believing these were important life skills. She made sure to pass those skills along to her children and grandchildren, teaching them not only how to create and care for things, but also the value of being able to do things for themselves.
Both Sharon and Bob grew up in farming families. Sharon had a lifelong love for all animals. She and Bob shared that love, working together over the years to care for their beloved dogs and raise many puppies for other families. Sharon and Bob cared for every one of their dogs and puppies as if they were their own.
Even as her time on this earth came to an end, Sharon continued to meet new people and remained a powerful force in her surroundings at The Oaks at Woodfield. She made an impression on the people around her and continued to show the spicy personality that those who knew and loved her will remember so well. She spent her final moments surrounded by family, as well as friends and staff who were fortunate enough to know her and be graced by her presence.
Sharon is survived by her steadfast husband of 65 years, Robert (Bob) J. Steckert; her four children, Deanna Steckert (longtime partner Bob), Deborah (Deb) Steckert-Burkett (Gary), Robert (Steve) Steckert, and John Steckert; and her grandchildren, Mary Louisa (Louie) Hager and Zachary (Zach) Hager, children of Deanna, and Zoe Burkett, daughter of Deb and Gary.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Ray and Lydia Sabisch, and her siblings, Ray, Arlette, and Bobby. She was also preceded in death this past year by her beloved dogs, Chewy and Coco.
The immediate family will gather for a small, private Celebration of Life honoring Sharon. For those who would like to share a story, or offer their condolences, please feel free to reach out to the family through the Sharp Funeral Home’s page, or in a Facebook post. The family would like to profoundly thank the staff at The Oaks at Woodfield and St. Croix Hospice for their unwavering, kind, compassionate, and professional support during this difficult time. Their care and kindness brought comfort to Sharon and her family during her final days.
Sharon will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered for her caring heart, her creativity, her love of animals and family, her determination, her hard work, and, above all, her unmistakable feisty personality.
