Stanley William Smith

SMITH, Stanley William - Age 95, of Linden, passed away Sunday, February 25, 2024.  Funeral service will be held 11:00 AM Friday, March 1, 2024 at Transfiguration Lutheran Church, 14176 Fenton Road, Fenton.  The Rev. Kate Zywicki officiating.  Burial 2:30 PM Friday, March 1, 2024 in Great Lakes National Cemetery, Holly.  Visitation will be held at Sharp Funeral Homes, Fenton Chapel, 1000 Silver Lake Road, Fenton Thursday from 2-8 PM and at church Friday from 10:00 AM until the time of the service.  Those desiring may make contributions to Transfiguration Lutheran Church.  

Stan was born December 27, 1928 in Detroit, the son of William John Leonard and Nettie E. (Burandt) Smith.  He was a graduate of Denby High School in Detroit and he received a Bachelor's Degree and 2 Master Degree's from Michigan State University.  He was a veteran of the Korean War serving in the U.S. Army.  He married Madeline Ann Conte April 12, 1958 in Detroit.  Stan was a longtime resident of Warren and was a former active member of Mt. Zion Lutheran Church Detroit.  He retired from the Grosse Pointe School District as a teacher; he also taught Adult Education. While a teenager, Stan was a part of the Mt. Zion baseball team that won the city championship.  This close group of friends formed a life-long club called "Club Mohawk"; which lasted nearly 80 years, which Stan was the last surviving member.  It was with these friends, their wives and families that many great times were had at picnics, camping, golfing and traveling. He was a member of Transfiguration Lutheran Church in Fenton. He was an artist.  He also enjoyed bowling, golfing and sailing.

Surviving are: his wife of 66 years, Madeline; son, Curt (Linda) Smith of Tucson, AZ; daughter, Karen Herdman of Fenton; grandsons, John William Herdman of Fenton, Luke A. Herdman of Fenton and James C. Herdman of Lapeer; sister-in-law, Donna (Pete) Flax of Clinton Township; and numerous nieces and nephews. 

He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Donald Smith.  Tributes may be shared at www.sharpfuneralhomes.com.
