In Loving Memory of Steven J. Greene
Steven J. Greene, of Highland, passed away on Friday, September 11th, at Harper Hospital in Detroit. He was 59 years old.
Steve was born on May 20, 1967, in Würzburg, Germany, to Theodore Greene and Caroline (Clark) Bantle.
Steve had a voice that was impossible to forget—a strong, deep voice that became familiar to so many people throughout the years. He began his radio broadcasting career at our local radio station, WHMI, through the Junior Achievement Program. That beginning led to a 25-year career in broadcasting, taking him throughout northern Michigan, Florida, and Ohio. Along the way, Steve made countless friends and touched more lives than we will ever know.
But Steve was so much more than his voice.
He was a creative soul who could find beauty in the simplest things. He had a special love for photography, and his camera roll tells the story of a man who loved to capture the world around him. Nature was his favorite subject, and through his photographs, he preserved the beauty that caught his eye and his heart. He also enjoyed woodworking and creating beautiful freehand drawings through wood burning.
Perhaps one of the greatest expressions of Steve’s heart was his love for animals. He opened his home to dogs in need, serving as a foster home and helping rescues whenever he could. He didn’t just talk about loving animals—he gave them a safe place, a second chance, and a home. His beloved dogs, Echo, Smilie, and Stix, all rescues from Flint, were a very special part of his life and will carry his love with them.
Steve leaves behind his mother, Caroline Bantle; his sister, Terri Cornell, and her husband, Kevin; his brother, Brian Greene; six nieces and nephews, Andrew, Neil, Derek, Kaylee, Justin, and Garrett; and three great-nieces and great-nephews, Ezekiel, Elsie, and Lucas.
He was preceded in death by his father, Theodore Greene; his sister-in-law, Shelly Greene; and his stepfather, Ron Bantle.
Funeral services will be held Friday, September 18th, at 1:00 p.m. at Sharp Funeral Homes, Fenton Chapel, 1000 Silver Lake Road, Fenton. Visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. until the time of service. A light luncheon will follow the service prior to burial at Riddle Cemetery in Howell.
Steve leaves behind more than memories. He leaves behind the sound of his voice in the memories of those who heard him, photographs that captured the beauty he saw, friendships formed along the way, and animals whose lives were made better simply because he cared.
He was one of a kind, deeply loved, and will be missed more than words can say.
