Susan Ann McEwen

December 19, 1940 — March 13, 2026

Susan Ann McEwen, age 85, of Fenton, passed away peacefully on March 13, 2026. A gathering to celebrate her life will be held at a later date.

Susan was born on December 19, 1940, in Kalamazoo, the daughter of the late Everett and Annetta (Harmens) VanHoeve. She married Dr. Paul McEwen on June 30, 1968, beginning a partnership that would span nearly 58 years.

Susan was a graduate of the University of Michigan School of Nursing, where she served as president of her senior class. Her passion for learning and helping others led her to earn a teaching certificate, after which she taught English in the Ypsilanti Community Schools. She later returned to the University of Michigan to earn her master’s degree and went on to teach reading in the Plymouth Community Schools.

Susan and Paul eventually made their home on Lobdell Lake, where she devoted many years to raising their family and caring deeply for the lake community. Her tenacity and drive helped her overcome roadblocks to implement several innovative projects that preserved the lake’s beauty. She was instrumental in several preservation projects that enhanced the natural habitats of local parks. Susan also served as a Trustee for Argentine Township for 10 years, contributing her time and energy to the people she served.

In retirement, Susan’s creativity and curiosity continued to flourish. She taught herself the art of chair caning and opened a small business in Linden, where she restored cherished furniture for many in the community.

Susan is survived by her devoted husband, Paul; her sons, Brett (Karen) and Dyke (Laura); and her beloved grandchildren, Elana, Avery, Isabel, Madison, and Payton. She is also survived by her brother-in-law, Brian, and by her former foreign exchange student, Erik Garmland and family, who remained a special part of her life.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Janet.
