William Travis

TRAVIS , William Edward - Age 95, of Swartz Creek, died August 23, 2014. Funeral services will be held 11 AM Wednesday, August 27 at Sharp Funeral Homes, Miller Road Chapel, 8138 Miller Road, Swartz Creek, Dr. Gerald Woodruff officiating. Interment in Great Lakes National Cemetery, Holly. Visitation will be 4-8 PM Tuesday, 10-11 AM Wednesday. William was born October 12, 1918 in Rockingham County, NC, the son of William Henry Travis and Winnie Lee (Benton) Travis. He was a veteran of WWII serving in the U.S. Navy as one of the original crew members of the U.S.S. Amsterdam. He married Mary Jane Sutphin; and she preceded him in death October 13, 2005. He was an Electrician (IBEW Local 948). William was a member of the Old Fashioned Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon. Surviving are: children, Virginia (Morsey) Saunders of Nixa, MO, William Travis of Sun City AZ, Barbara (Dennis) Martin of Swartz Creek, Linda (John) Corkins of Davison, Shirley (Gerald) Woodruff of Swartz Creek, Betty (Richard) Brewer of Swartz Creek; 24 grandchildren; 49 great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren; sister Irene (Don) Hadaway of Concord, CA; brother-in-law, Earl (Janeil) Sutphin; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Mary Jane; daughter-in-law Phyllis Travis; 8 brothers; 3 sisters. Tributes may be shared on the obituaries page at www.sharpfuneralhomes.com.
