Yutha Hayes

February 1, 1932 — April 26, 2014

HAYES, Yutha Mae -- Age 82, of Swartz Creek, died April 26, 2014 at Nathan's Place. Her family and caregivers were with her throughout the last days of her journey. Services will be held 11AM on Saturday, May 3, 2014 at Sharp Funeral Homes, Miller Road Chapel, 8138 Miller Road, Swartz Creek, with Pastor Ron Nuckles officiating. Visitation will be held Friday, May 2 from 3-8 PM and Saturday from 10 AM until time of service. Yutha was born February 1, 1932 in Brandsville, MO, the daughter of Clarence and Yula (Rouintree) Gannon. Education was always very important to Yutha; she graduated from high school and college in Missouri, and then earned another degree from EMU and a Masters Degree from CMU in Michigan. Yutha was a resident of Michigan since the early 1950's. She began her teaching career in a one room school teaching 30 students in seven grades. Over the years she would teach in several districts. She retired from Swartz Creek Schools where she worked as the middle school media specialist and librarian. In addition to her education career, she was very proud to have written several books, especially the History of Swartz Creek, "Going Up The Swartz." She was a sixty year member of West Court Street Church of God, and loved her friends there. She volunteered for the Sparks organization in Genesee County, and was part of the Historical Society in Swartz Creek. In her personal life, she was most proud of her role in her daughter, son-in-law, and four grandchildren's lives. She passed her respect for education on to all of them and also her love of family. She will be remembered by her family for her fierce independence, determination and spunk. Surviving are: daughter and son-in-law Kelli and Gerard Williams of Swartz Creek; grandchildren, Shanna of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, Trevor of Rochester Hills, Logan of Kalamazoo, Brie of Swartz Creek, brother David (Millie) Gannon of Missouri, niece Nancy of Missouri, and many other beloved family members. In addition, she leaves good friends whom she loved and respected. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband of many years Melvin Hayes; brothers Ralph and Gene; sisters Anita and Rowena.
