George Nickola

NICKOLA, George "Nick" -- Age 84, of Grand Blanc and Beaverton, died Saturday, April 14, 2012 at Hurley Medical Center. Funeral will be 11 AM Tuesday, April 17 at St. George Orthodox Church, 5191 Lennon Rd., Flint, Rev. Fr. Joseph Abud officiating. Interment at Gracelawn Cemetery, Flint. Visitation will be 1-9 PM Monday at Sharp Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 6063 Fenton Rd., Flint with a 7 PM Trisagion service; and 10 AM until the time of service at 11 AM at church on Monday. Those desiring may make contributions to St. Judes Childrens Hospital or St. George Orthodox Church. Mr. Nickola was born January 4, 1928 in Flint the son of Faris and Mary (Salim) Nickola. He grew up working in the family business Nick's Market on Harriet Street in Flint. He was a graduate of Flint Technical High School. He married Thelma Chuleas in July 25, 1954 in Flint; she preceded him in death January 24, 2008. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in Korea as a Sergeant with the Medics. Mr. Nickola retired from A.C. Spark Plug in 1987. He was a member and had served on the board at St. George Church. He was instrumental in starting their festival. He enjoyed music, gardening, landscaping, working with his hands, fly fishing, corny jokes, bicycling, boxing, and casino trips. He enjoyed traveling and was proud to say he had visited all 50 states. Most importantly, he enjoyed spending time with his family. He was proud of his Lebanese Heritage and was thrilled when his son accompanied him on a visit to Lebanon in 2002. Surviving are: three children, Tina and husband Tom Bowles of Columbiaville, Joseph and wife Jody Nickola of Grand Blanc, Nicole and husband Bill Salgat of Columbiaville; grandchildren, Morgan Salgat, Maria Salgat, Margee Nickola, Kylie Nickola, Jordan Nickola, Kristy and husband Shawn Sager, Angela and husband John Dyer; great-grandchildren, Hailey Dyer, Gabriella Dyer, and Julian Salgat; sisters-in-law, Athena Chuleas, Anna Williams, and Maria Chuleas; many nieces and nephews; many great-nieces and great-nephews; loving extended family; and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Thelma; two sons, Faris and Michael; brother Iser; and two sisters, Lucille Raffoul and Louise Caleca.
