Joe was born April 11, 1949 in Pleasanton, TX, the son of Ignacio H. and Emma (Valdez) Barrera. He graduated from Flint Beecher High School, where he proudly served as Senior Class President. Joe worked at Pepsi Cola Co. in Flint until 1970 and as a dye maker at General Motors-Delphi Flint where he retired in 2004. He served on the Burton City Council, was a member of the UAW local 651, Quality Control Instructor, Realtor, Real Estate Appraiser, and continued to be involved in local politics. As a teenager, Joe would travel to Northern Michigan to pick cherries in the summer and was introduced to the beautiful landscape that Traverse City/Leelanau County had to offer. In 2006 Joe and his wife moved to Northport. His love for cigars inspired him to open a cigar store in Suttons Bay, Leelanau Cigar Company (Joe’s Place). Joe’s favorite past times were smoking cigars while watching sunsets over Lake Michigan, meeting new people, and having long conversations with friends and family. His patience, intelligence, and sense of humor were with him until the end. Joe was loved by many and for those who knew him, he would most certainly have a story that ended in a smile. Surviving: his mother, Emma Barrera of Las Vegas; three daughters: Arianna Barrera of Sacramento, CA, Kristina Barrera of Mamaroneck, NY, Nicole Barrera of Fenton; grandchildren: Evelyn, Nicholas, Emmalee; sister, Cynthia (Donato) Tijerina of Fenton Township; brother, Ed Barrera of Las Vegas; nieces and nephews: Ivonna, Regina, Tamara, David, Julie, Jeff, and Jason; his first wife, mother of his daughters, Cheryl Barrera; sisters-in-law, Judith LePage, and Joyce (Jack) King. He was preceded in death by his father Ignacio; and wife Sussanne. Tributes may be shared at www.sharpfuneralhomes.com.
