Nelson Schafer M.D.

SCHAFER, M.D., Nelson Stewart - Age 87, of Flint, died Monday, May 10, 2021. A private service will be held at Machpelah Cemetery, Flint. Contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, Congregation Beth Israel, or Chabad House-Lubavitch of Eastern Michigan.

Dr. Schafer was born February 16, 1934 in Flint, the son of Henry and Rae (Kleiner) Schafer. He was a graduate of the University of Michigan with a Bachelor's of Science degree and received his Doctor of Medicine degree from The Chicago Medical School. He was a surgeon at Hurley Medical Center in Flint for many decades. He was a lifelong member of Congregation Beth Israel. He also was a member of the Genesee County Medical Society and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.

Surviving are: his wife, Barbara; 3 children, Marilyn Kassel (Dr. Larry Kassel) of Flint, Scott Schafer (Vicky Schafer) of Florida, and Dr. Mark Schafer (Rosalind Charbit) of California; 7 grandchildren, Joshua Kassel (Dina Afra) of California, Shiri Kassel of Illinois, Dr. Michelle Kassel (Hector Perez Nieto) of California, Jennifer Schafer (fiance Nicholas Cole) of Florida, Eric Schafer (fiance Kathleen Quijada) of Florida, Morgan Schafer (fiance Joanne Lau) of California, Dr. Julie Schafer (Dr. Connor Farrell) of California; brother, Jerome Schafer of Ann Arbor, niece (Susan Schafer) and nephew (David Schafer) and many other loving family members.
