She completed her RN nursing degree at the University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor. It was here she met the love of her life, Robert. The two were married on September 25, 1948, in Ypsilanti. They started a loving family together in Flint.

Phyllis worked as an RN for 20 years at McLaren Hospital and 20 more volunteering there. She loved animals and helped found C.A.R.E. to help rescue those in the Flint area. She was a lifelong board member. She was also a proud member of Marriage Encounter.

Her children and grandchildren remember her many acts of generosity:

“Phyllis was not only filled with energy and had a contagious desire to live life to its fullest. She had a sense of adventure and a love of people. She was not afraid to engage strangers in conversation and to extend her help and kindness to others. She chose a profession that fit her personality as a nurse. She applied her skill to countless people in need.”

“She volunteered a lot of her time to help others.”

"She was kind-hearted and had many friends because she was a good willing listener who spent hours on the phone every day.”

“She sent a card and check to all her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren on their birthdays and at Christmas.”

“She loved people and all the animals.”

“She was a leader and initiated projects without hesitation even in her later years. Her work with the animal rescue organization showcased her willingness by going out there in the frigid Michigan weather to rescue an animal trapped in a frozen lake.”

“She had multiple bird feeders and loved watching the birds from her kitchen window in all seasons that they came to eat.”Phyllis is survived by her children, Kathrine A. (Michael) Persich, Richard A. (Marta) Carter, George Christian Carter, and John P. Carter; grandchildren, Andrew Bess, Melinda Grant, Ashley Rayman, Oliver Carter, Nicole Carter, Vanessa Anderson and Margaret Klug; and 11 great-grandchildren with one more soon. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert M.; brother, James Bumke; and parents, Robert and Margaret Bumke. Online condolences may be posted on the obituaries page of sharpfuneralhomes.com.
